What is Down’s syndrome?

Typically, people will have 46 Chromosomes, however an individual with Down’s syndrome will have three copies of the 21st chromosome making 47, this is what we call Trisomy 21.

What’s it like to have Down’s Syndrome?

Every child with Down’s syndrome will have some level of learning disability, however, there is a vast range of resources, information and support to help you to help them to reach their potential. The most important thing to remember is that everyone with Down’s syndrome is an individual, with their own strengths and weaknesses and personality traits that make them who they are.

Some children born with Down’s syndrome may have some additional health needs. Most people with Down’s syndrome learn to walk and talk and live fulfilling lives. Many children with Down’s syndrome will attend mainstream school and take their GCSEs. Just because they have Down’s syndrome, doesn’t mean they can’t learn, it just means it may take them slightly longer to get there.

Some people will be more independent and do things like get a job. Other people might need more regular care.

Life with someone with Down’s syndrome can be a challenge, is very often amazing and is certainly never boring!
