Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)

Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group is proud to offer ongoing Speech and Language Therapy to our members. These sessions support communication, confidence, and independence, and remain one of our most valued services.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our members were out of education for an extended period and missed out on valuable learning opportunities. In response, the Trustees had to think creatively to ensure we could continue providing Speech and Language Therapy, helping our members maintain consistency and progress in their communication development.

This led us to Mable Speech Therapy, an organisation that delivers high-quality therapy sessions online.

Mable Speech Therapy offers 20-minute, one-to-one virtual sessions, tailored to each individual. The service proved to be extremely successful, and as a result, the Group continues to provide Speech and Language Therapy virtually for our members.

Who the sessions are for

We provide therapy for two age groups:

Session schedule

The total annual cost of providing these sessions is approximately £40,000. Our Trustees and members work hard to raise funds to ensure we can continue offering this vital support.

How sessions are delivered

All therapy sessions are delivered online through Mable Therapy.

Each member is matched with a dedicated therapist who:

Appointment times can be chosen to fit around school, work, and other commitments.

Ages 3-18 (Children & Young People)

✅ We hope to restart face-to-face sessions in the future, subject to securing a suitable therapist.

Ages 18+ (Adults)

Mable Therapy also provides:

Giving our children a voice

Our Speech and Language Therapy sessions are available to all children and young people with Down’s syndrome who live in or are educated within the SN postcode area (and surrounding locations), and who have been members of the Group for at least six months.

We aim to keep this service as accessible as possible and do not charge a standard fee for children and families to access the programme. We never want financial circumstances to prevent anyone from taking part.

Instead, we ask members to support the programme by helping to contribute towards the cost of therapy. This can be done by taking part in individual or group fundraising activities, volunteering at fundraising events, or making a donation where possible.

Adults over the age of 18 who receive Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) once a fortnight are asked to contribute £10 per session. For those under 18, families are encouraged to support the programme by making a donation or giving their time to help at fundraising events throughout the year.

Each year we work hard to raise over £40,000 to ensure we can continue providing Speech and Language Therapy for our members.

“We believe that people with Down’s syndrome have a valuable role to play in their local community—especially when we help them to strengthen communication skills, build confidence, and develop a real sense of worth.”
