About our group
We are an independent charity, affiliated to the National Down’s Syndrome Association. We have been support people with Down’s Syndrome, their families and carers and all those with an interest in Down’s Syndrome in Swindon and the surrounding area for over ten years.
In 2010 our group was recognised with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK, the MBE for volunteer groups.
We received this prestigious Award for supporting people with Down’s Syndrome and their families in the local area since the group was founded in 1984. We were recognised for all the work we do in providing support and information, weekly speech and language therapy, resource packs, training days, sports lessons, coffee afternoons, outings, trips and parties.
What can we offer you?
We offer a broad range of services and support from the moment your child is born right through to adult hood. We have tailor made resource packs to help you at every stage of your childs development, with a specially designed pack for new parents. We also have a dedicated book and audio library should you need further information. We can also provide information on services available to you in our local area.
Our monthly toddler groups, coffee afternoons and family activity days allow you to regularly meet with other parents and carers and build your own social network. We provide lots of group activities for our people with Down’s Syndrome giving them a great opportunity to make friends, these include:
- Gym sessions
- Weekly term time football training
- Fortnightly and holiday swimming sessions
- Salamader Fire Course
- Regular parties and trips
- Drama project
